Wexford Bus, has launched a new iPhone App. This App enables passengers to track live bus positions, predict arrival times and view the timetable.
A UCD Computer Science Lecturer and regular user of Wexford Bus, Mel O’ Cinnéide, initiated the development of this App, he explains “One wet evening, I was wondering whether I had time to dash from my desk in UCD for the next bus home? I thought wouldn’t it be great if I could see exactly where the bus was now. The idea developed from there” Ó Cinnéide got in touch with Wexford Bus, and a collaboration developed where UCD Computer Science students built several exploratory prototypes to provide Wexford Bus commuters with live bus information. Ó Cinnéide’s software company, Imeall Software, subsequently built and developed this commercial mobile application. Ó Cinnéide comments “Wexford Bus immediately wanted to embrace this technology. They provided us with direct access to their live data and customers — we simply couldn’t have built this system without their help.”
This dynamic App has numerous useful features. For example, the live map displays all the bus stops between Wexford and Dublin Airport and illustrates where the buses are positioned in relation to these stops. Users can choose their favourite bus stops and view the predicted arrival time of the next bus.
“We are delighted to bring this new service to our passengers. We have a tech savvy customer base that continuously uses the free wi-fi on our buses. We are always looking for ways to improve our service through technology, so are delighted to offer this new service to our passengers.” Commented Lorene Crowley, Commercial Director, Wexford Bus.
The App, which is still in a pilot phase, is now available for download from the iTunes App Store. To download the Wexford Bus App visit the App store and search for Wexford Bus or go to http://tinyurl.com/WexfordBusApp. Passengers are being encouraged to participate in the trial and to download the free app.
Imeall Software plans to develop this low-cost solution further and make it available to other medium-sized bus companies.
